Specialized Meeting on Family Farming in Mercosur: Farmers’ organizations and NGOs recommend to generate specific actions related to the AIAF-2014 on national agendas.
Civil society organizations in the XIX Specialized Meeting on Family Farming (REAF) in Mercosur, which was held between 27 and 30 May in Atlantida (Uruguay), showed their support for the International Year of Family Farming 2014 and proposed it remains as a “strategic issue” for the upcoming editions. Farmers’ organizations and NGOs gathered at the meeting encouraged REAF’s National Sections to boost IYFF-2014 national committees in each country of the region and to generate related “specific initiatives and actions” on national agendas during 2013 and 2014.
More than 150 government officials and family farmers belonging to rural organizations have joined the XIX REAF around an ambitious agenda on various issues related to Family Farming. Some spaces were opened up to prepare the IYFF-2014 as a framework for advocacy and awareness.
The interest and involvement of national governments in organizing the IYFF-2014 also became visible during the nineteenth REAF, where participants belonging to governments have shown a real commitment with the International Year.
The REAF is a forum for political dialogue between governments’ and civil society representatives, in order to build initiatives and joint reflection on the development of Family Farming in the region.
