The Permanent Mission of Costa Rica to FAO, IFAD and WFP; the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to FAO, IFAD and WFP; the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD); the World Rural Forum (WRF) and La Via Campesina (LVC), are co-organizing a High-Level Event during the 47th Session of the Committee on World Food Security. The event titled “Implementing the UN Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF) to face COVID-19 and achieve resilient and sustainable food systems” is taking place on February 10th from 13:00 to 14:15 (CET). http://Flyer_CFS_evento
The event will be broadcast with simultaneous interpretation in English and Spanish. Registration is open until end of 8 february 2021.https://fao.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUtdOmgqz8rEtUbR4n1JlBjYNoJSYr8-Uvs .
The event will recognize the UNDFF as a framework for countries to develop public policies and investments to support family farming from a holistic perspective, thus contributing to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by unleashing their transformative potential.
The side event will offer an overview on the ongoing implementation of the UNDFF at both global and national levels, and will focus on UNDFF potential to identify and put into practices concrete actions and policies to support family farmers, their livelihoods and their access to markets during the current COVID pandemic, and as well as to display family farmers’ potential for contributing to revamp rural economies in the recovery phase.
Leveraging on specific CFS products/recommendations (Connecting smallholders to markets, Investing in smallholder agriculture for food security, VGGT, among others) is paramount to achieve these goals that require a coordinated, participatory multi-stakeholder approach. To this end, the UNDFF envisages the creation and implementation of 100 National Action Plans for Family Farming, which are contextualized frameworks guiding different stakeholders in implementing the UNDFF based on coordinated actions and clearly identified priorities and mechanisms, and which represent a relevant framework to address the actual challenges.
“The Decade of Family Farming provides an extraordinary opportunity for the United Nations to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an inclusive, collaborative and coherent way”.
